Delays during PBMC isolation have a moderate effect on yield, but severely compromise cell viability

One of BBMRI.at’s core competences is quality management and a particular focus is put on the pre-analytical phase, which can significantly alter an analytical outcome and lead to incorrect results.

Experts at Med Uni Wien Biobank therefore investigate a critical step during the isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). PBMCs are widely used in clinical routine and research.

Their studies show that a 24h delayed processing of cells after Ficoll gradient centrifugation led to substantial decrease in cell viability with increased apoptosis.
