Leukemia biobanking – A milestone in the fight against blood cancer

The integration of the leukemia biobank collection of the Clinical Department of Hematology into the biobank of the Medical University of Graz marks a significant step forward in improving sample quality for both research and clinical patient care. Thanks to generous financial support, the necessary nitrogen tank for long-term sample storage could be financed.

Leukemia biobanking – an essential resource for archiving blood and bone marrow samples from leukemia patients – has been conducted at the Clinical Department of Haematology since 1995. These samples are preserved under the highest quality standards in liquid nitrogen, ensuring their availability for long-term research and diagnostic purposes.

Biobanking makes a significant contribution to leukemia research and therapy development. In addition to pure research, it is also an integral part of clinical practice, supporting diagnosis confirmation, genetic analysis and the development and establishment of new diagnostic methods.

A significant advancement was now the incorporation of the Leukemia biobank collection from the Clinical Department of Haematology into Biobank Graz. This ensures compliance with all established standards and ISO certification of Biobank Graz, further enhancing the quality of stored samples.

The successful realization of this project was made possible through the financial contribution of Med Uni Graz, the LKH University Hospital and Leukemia Aid Styria. Their support enabled the acquisition of a vital nitrogen tank worth 35,000 euros, securing the long-term storage of these valuable samples.
