Register now: HELT 2025- One Health Workshop on Legal, Environmental, and Technological Challenges in Digital Health Research

BBMRI.at is pleased to announce its participation in the upcoming 3rd Health, Law and Technology Symposium (HELT 2025), hosted by the Health & Ageing Law Lab (HALL) of Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

One Health is topic at Health, Law and Technology Symposium (HELT 2025) in Brussels

On 24 April 2025 the Health, Law and Technology Symposium (HELT 2025) will take place for the 3rd time. This year’s theme is “One Health: Advancing Global Health through Law and Technology”. The symposium recruits speakers and participants from different disciplines and professional backgrounds who share their views on the intersection of health, law and technology.

The One Health approach serves as the conceptual backbone of the discussion, highlighting the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health—an increasingly relevant topic in both public health and biomedical research. HELT 2025 will focus on key legal, ethical and technological issues associated with the “One Health” concept and their implications on global health.

One Health concept is also important for biobanks and reflected in the 10-Year Roadmap of BBMRI-ERIC, which emphasises the role of the biobanking community in advancing global health. During the HELT workshop, the organizers together with participants will explore how biobanks contribute to the goals of the One Health approach and how the new EU legal acts dealing with secondary use of health data and samples of human origin will impact biobanks in their facilitation of scientific research objectives.

BBMRI.at partner organizes workshop on One Health and legal implications

As part of the HELT 2025 symposium BBMRI.at partner UNVIE with experts from the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law organise a workshop titled “One Health: Exploring the Effects of Contemporary Legal, Environmental, and Technological Challenges to Digital Health Research”. It will take place on 24 April 2025, from 9:40 to 11:10 at Sparks Meeting – The Pad Room in Brussels.

In this workshop the BBMRI.at colleagues from UNIVIE unite activities and findings from three third-party funded projects in the field of health research they  are active in: BBMRI.at (Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure Austria), COMMUTE (Comorbidity Mechanisms Utilized in Healthcare) and SYNTHIA (Synthetic Data Generation framework for integrated validation of use cases and AI healthcare applications).

The workshop will be moderated by Nikolaus Forgó, University of Vienna, leader of BBMRI.at WP2 on legal issues and expert in IT and data protection law. The workshop will be a forum for the discussion of topics, such as the impact of new European Union legal acts dealing with secondary use of health data (in particular, the European Health Data Space (EHDS) Regulation) in health-related research and in the generation of synthetic data. Additionally, another component of the workshop will cover advancements in AI and Big Data analytics, and a reflection on how they can be harnessed to improve disease surveillance in a legally and ethically responsible manner.

BBMRI.at will be represented by Klaudia Kwiatkowska, contributing insights on ethical, legal and societal implications (ELSI) in biobanking and digital health. This interdisciplinary session will bring together legal, ethical, and technological perspectives to discuss the complex environment in which digital health research is evolving.
