Nobel laureate visited Biobank at Med Uni Graz
BBMRI.at partner Biobank Graz had the honor of welcoming Prof. Ferenc Krausz, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2023. His visit, initiated at his personal request, provided an opportunity to explore one of the largest and most advanced hospital-based biobanks in Europe.
During his stay in Graz, where Prof. Krausz was invited to deliver the BioTechMed-Graz Nobel Lecture at the Technical University of Graz, he expressed great interest in visiting the Biobank. Accompanied by Med Uni Graz Rector Andrea Kurz and Vice Rector Christian Enzinger, as well as several scientists from Med Uni Graz and Technical University of Graz, he received a guided tour from Monika Valjan, Head of Biobank Graz. This visit offered a unique opportunity to showcase the Biobank’s infrastructure and scientific expertise, as well as to discuss potential collaborations.
Ferenc Krausz is Director at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and Professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. In 2023 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics alongside Pierre Agostini and Anne L’Huillier for pioneering attosecond physics. His research, which led to the creation of light pulses that allow the observation of extremely brief time intervals, enables the visualization of sub-atomic movements of electrons. In the future, such insights could revolutionize our understanding of human health.
By inviting a Nobel Prize winner to Graz, the BioTechMed-Graz Nobel Lecture series contributes to communicating cutting-edge science to a broad audience. In his lecture “Sub-atomic motions probe human health – How basic science addresses grand challenges”, Prof. Krausz highlighted the role of fundamental physics in tackling key medical and societal challenges. BioTechMed-Graz is a research alliance of the University of Graz, Graz University of Technology, and the Medical University of Graz, focusing on joint research at the intersection of biomedical research, technological developments, and medical applications for health.
This visit and the subsequent Nobel Lecture underline the importance of international scientific networking and interdisciplinary cooperation, which are actively promoted by the Medical University of Graz.
